SPEEDWAY TRACK YAK
Carnarvon Speedway Club is to be congratulated for the co-ordination of one of the clubs biggest busy bees held recently. Approximately 40 volunteers gave up their weekend to assist in major works carried out on the track surface and general works around the club.
The track work involved removing the current surface and replacing it with new clay and increasing the camber of the track. The existing clay was put in 10 years ago and over the years has become worn out. By gradually increasing the camber towards the wall will create a faster race track with more opportunities of safer overtaking. This will make for faster racing for all competitors.
This was a huge task and the project would not have been possible without the generosity of local contractors Tremor Earthmoving, Burke Holla, Laurie Ladhams and G&L Bobcat and Truck Hire and Munro’s. Many of the operators of the equipment supplied that assisted were not club members but associates of these businesses listed and all of their voluntary help is truly appreciated.
Other jobs accomplished was the completion of the paving area, replacement of some of the outside fencing poles, plus the very messy job of painting all of these poles, collection and stacking of batteries and general tidy up. So much was achieved over a short period and it was a great team effort by all involved. So thanks to everyone who did their bit. The last weekend of 2007 saw Burke Holla and pit crew Neil Fancote, and sons Mathew and Cameron once again make their way to Geraldton to gain the opportunity of some valuable track practice. Burke is totally focused on this years Limited Sprintcar State Title to be held in Geraldton over the Anzac weekend in April.
If the weekends racing is anything to go by, he will certainly be in there with a chance. Even though the sprinters were a support division to the main event the Production Sizzle, numbers were encouraging with 10 cars nominated for two nights of racing. Burke finished well in all his heats, qualifying 3rd in the feature on the first night and finishing 2nd and taking out a win in the feature on the second night.
They are really happy with the way the sprinter is handling and now are convinced they have the right setups suitable for the small oval Geraldton track.
Burke can’t wait to have a run in the Maxim chassis on his home track against the local boys, especially now with the new surface. Carnarvon Speedway Clubs sprintcar division has also increased. We now have five nominated drivers for this season commencing on the 2nd February. Burke’s next two big shows will be in Geraldton again at the John Stephens Memorial on March 22nd and 23rd where good numbers are promised to compete.
Drivers please remember that all the necessary paper work including car rego, licence and insurance needs to be completed before the first race meeting.
So be sure to catch us on clay at Carnarvon Speedway for the start of the season 2nd Feb. |
