First of all I would like to thank everybody for a huge weekend, a top effort by all concerned and a great turnout considering being near Christmas with many people being busy and the amount of functions around town, we estimate about 40 people helped out.

I would also like to make a special mention to the businesses that supplied (and operated) some of the equipment we required, they are G and L bobcat and truck (Gerard and Lynn), Gascoyne Cranes (Burkie), Tremor earthmoving, Laurie Ladhams,  Munro’s and other cement mixers, whipper snippers, chain saw’s, augers and tractors who I am not sure were loaned by.

Although I was mostly involved with the track work a great number of other need to be done jobs were finished including fencing, painting, paving, tree lopping, whipper snipping, battery collection and general tidying up making the whole area look great, with many people working both days under somewhat painful conditions with the amount of dust being created.

I am proud to be involved in a sporting club that can achieve this sort of cooperation in these busy times and then sit back in our club room at the end of the day and have a couple of beers and a laugh about the day’s events.

A few people have asked me what we are doing to the track, well what we are “trying” to achieve is to increase the upward camber and replace the clay with fresh material (The existing clay was put in 10 years ago and over the years has become contaminated and worn out). The original plan was to raise the concrete wall and increase the camber but as the clay needed to be replaced we decided to lower the pole line. Over the years of listening to people talking about race tracks the common problem (other tracks as well as ours) is when a track becomes “one lane” along the pole line making outside passing very difficult, by gradually increasing the camber towards the wall this should create a faster race track with more opportunities of safe overtaking. As with all major works it is difficult to estimate the time required and I miscalculated how long this job would take and am planning another busy bee weekend on the 12th and 13th of January to cart the clay in and then Les can do his magic and build the best race track in Australia.

Last but not least I would like to mention Billy Smith, Terry Rodier and Albert who although having no regular involvement in the club (other than assisting with the bar takings) came out and helped which was much appreciated.

Again thanks to everyone and I am certainly looking forward to the up and coming season with extra cars racing and some big events planned.

PS we have some photos of the weekend which will be posted onto the website www.carnarvonspeedway.com  so make sure you have a look and get your cars photographed and send them in.

Regards, Barry Mason
