Lyall Wins Feature
The Carnarvon Speedway held it’s Smarter than Smoking Junior Perpetual Trophy meeting over the weekend with Junior drivers from all over the state taking advantage of the valuable track time prior to the WASCF Junior State Title being held locally in April. There were a total of 10 visiting junior drivers travelling from Perth, Geraldton, Newman and Shark Bay’s Brendon Mettom, Hayden Norman and Michael Riccetti.
With 15 juniors in total racing the field was split in two heats per round with a gruelling 15 lap feature. Earlier in the night, Tristan Spicer of Perth lost a wheel during his first heat, while Newman’s Reece Jones in his final heat hit the wall after coming together with another with two drivers, putting him out for the feature.
Rhys Brown of Perth looked to win the feature after finishing all of his heats in first position, but it was local driver Damon Lyall who took the chequered flag for the feature in first place winning the perpetual trophy for his third year in a row. Local Alan Harper won one of his heats and raced competitive all night proving that he will be tough competition at the title.
Juniors were not the only division that saw visiting drivers, John Standering & Greg Robinson of Shark Bay raced in the Modified division along with Karratha’s Mal McCauley but both local drivers Travis Jackson and Kim Jolly were to take the chequered flag with an equal two heats each, although John proved very competitive taking second place in three of his heats.
Street Stock Division saw three Geraldton drivers increasing the field numbers to 16. Clinton John was back on track racing his new falcon and winning two of his heats placing him in pole position for the feature, unfortunately he was unable to complete the race leaving last meeting’s perpetual champion Daniel Pidala to take the win. Shane Winchbuist of Geraldton gave the locals a run for there money with one heat win and placing second in his remaining heats and the feature.
Exmouth drivers Troy Wright and Andrew Pedlar were back on track with the sprint cars, unfortunately mechanical difficulties saw Troy Wright out of the race at the beginning of the night. All three local boy’s Jim Andreoli, Burke Holla and Stephen Lyall with his awesome out side passes displayed even racing each winning a heat.
Thankyou to all the volunteers throughout the evening, the night was larger than expected with a total of 15 visiting drivers, Smarter than Smoking which sponsors our junior division along with Auto Pro donating prizes for all of the junior competitors along with the trophies. Our next race meeting is a point’s meeting being held on the 29th of March followed by the rumbling V8 Super Sedan Classic in April. “Catch ya on Clay at Carnarvon Speedway” |
