What a fantastic way to end a great season.
Carnarvon Speedway Club hosted their annual North West Championships at the June long weekend, over two nights.
Friday night saw the event kick off at the Tropicana Tavern with a meet & greet the drivers, including a drivers draw for the 18 Street Stocks competing in the Stocksville 30 Lapper feature race.
The weatherman certainly turned it on for our visiting drivers and crew that travelled as far as Broome to Bunbury and over to Kalgoorlie and in between.
Saturday morning saw a main street parade through town to catch a glimpse of some of the cars racing that night.
The kids along the Fascine competing in the CarnarFin Fishing Competition were pleasantly surprised as the parade passed them with a display as colourful as their lures.
The first night saw three rounds of heats which caused some work orders for the next day.
Unfortunately Travis Jackson wasn't able to replace the blown diff in his Modified RX7 and Sprintcar driver Andrew Pedlar's crew weren't able to get him back on track after breaking down in the first race on the first night.
Sunday night's program completed Rounds 4 & 5 plus the gruelling Feature Races.
The 20 Lap final for the Sprintcars was taken out by local driver, Burkie Holla, followed by ex Carnarvonite, Wayne Armstrong across the line second. Mark "Hooky" Doble from Perth 3rd.
In the Modifieds, Shane Brittain showed why he is WA1 with another consistent display in their 20 Lap feature. Kodee Brown from Broome 2nd, disappointed after expecting a restart from an incident on Turn 2 during the race. Carnarvon's veteran racer, Kim Jolly picked up third place.
The future of speedway drivers, the Smarter than Smoking Juniors put on a fantastic display of racing all weekend, sometimes four wide in the 22 meter corners.
Our six local drivers had a double influx to the division with two from Shark Bay and four from Geraldton.
Unfortunately for Rychelle Sullivan, she was off her recent pace after a change of engine and didn't take to the track in the Juniors 15 lap final.
However, fellow club member, Damon Lyall was the winner from Go to Woe. He polled highest in his heats to start on pole and he lead at every completion of laps.
Callen Johnstone from Geraldton did extremely well starting out of position 5, had a great dual with Brendan Mettam from Shark Bay , who came across the line 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The last race of the season, which is part of the Speedway Sedan Digest Street Stock Series, started at 9.56pm.
30 uninterrupted gruelling laps later, Carnarvon's Daniel Pidala crossed the line comfortably in first place at 10.10pm.
The Stocksville 30 Lapper saw 16 cars start, with Paula Lyall and Mark Wynne excluded with steering and mechanical problems.
Pidala the favourite after winning all of his 5 heats to start off pole didn't disappoint the HRT fan's.
Friend off the track, but arch rival on, Kane Munro stepped up for the FKR Team, starting outside pole.
Munro was caught out on the start as Wade Mason followed Pidala into the hole shot on the first corner from 3rd on the grid.
Munro tucked himself back into contention on the back straight behind Mason just in front of Jak Jackson. One more lap down and Munro had gained another position up to second, but the Italian Stallion had already bolted. Munro stayed in that spot for the remainder to finish a creditable second.
Youngster Wade Mason drove a great race in third place for 23 laps until suffering a flat tyre and dropped in to the centre to retire from the race.
He joined ex Late Model driver Mick Hammon who was out very early in the feature, also Lance Root after throwing belts in lap six.
Evan Wakefield from Kalgoorlie worked his way through the traffic into 3rd spot after Mason dropped out and he won the dual against Jak Jackson and they finished in that order.
Minor placings went to Gerard Clarke, Romeo Andreoli, Glenn Harper, Hairy Hickery, Leo Brooks, Paul Norman, Tara Mason and Tom Parry in that order.
Don't forget Race Fan's the clubs Wind-Up and Trophy Presentation is on this Saturday 16th of June at the Club House. All welcome, but please note, this is Not a racing event.
The AGM has been set for 7.30pm the 18th July 2007 at the Club House.
